This is a super simple DIY project you can do on a budget. I have candles in the guest bedroom and bathroom and like to have easy to find matches so guests don’t need to rummage through drawers to find the lighter or matches if they want to light the candle. I saw some of these cute match jars online for around $15-$20 but got the idea that I could easily DIY this on a budget.
For the project you’ll need three things: a 1 ounce spice jar, match strike sticker, and matches. We often buy the McCormick 1 ounce spice jars when we need a specific spice for a recipe. So probably TMI, but when I went through our spices to see if I could get rid of one of them for this project, I found that a lot of them were expired and I could make quite a few match jars. Gross! Self reminder to go through spice rack for expired things more often lol. So I removed the lid and label with some hot water and goo-be-gone.
The match strike stickers are a little more specific of a request but you’ll need these to be able to light your matches. With these stickers, you can basically make anything a match box. I found them on Etsy for under $4. I stuck on of these to the bottom of the jar.
If you wanted to make your jar more decorative, you could add a sticker to the front. If you have envelope seals, or a monogramme, you could use that. Or add a ribbon/twine and make a bow? There’s a bunch of ideas but for simplicity and making this project a quick DIY, I left mine plain. I filled my jar with 4 inch matches that I had bought from my local grocery store. Looking online, the 4 inch matches are a little tough to find but I found a few of them here on Amazon.
I love the way this looks so much more than a box of matches or a lighter sitting next to the candles. If you do this easy DIY project, please share with me, I’d love to see it!
